In the Beginning: Science Curriculum picks

As I’ve mentioned in earlier blog posts, the primary curriculum I plan to use with my son comes from the Foundation for American Christian Education, the Noah Plan, however science requires a supplemental curriculum to be complete.

***Edited to add apparently I was misinformed and science does not require a science supplement, for sure in Kindergarten. I still plan to make use of the curriculum mentioned below as an additional resource.

Before finding the Noah Plan and the Principle Approach I had done a LOT of curriculum research. I started looking for complete package curriculums but soon branched into looking into the separate subjects.

For science it was a priority for me and my husband that it be a creation based curriculum. After a general search, including looking at YouTube review covering ten different curriculums, I looked primarily at Masterbooks, Answers in Genesis and Apologia. (Masterbooks and Answers and Genesis have a partnership and therefore several overlapping materials.)

My husband was not a fan of Masterbooks as a whole but has great respect for Ken Ham and the Answers in Genesis ministry. He left the decision in my hands, as he typically has through this process.

Apologia’s Young Explorers series uses the days of creation to cover science in the elementary years. After watching some reviews on YouTube and looking on their website, I was sold.

My favorite aspects of this curriculum in addition to following the days of creation, it also incorporates note-booking. This method is used in the Principle Approach and appeals to me on a personal level. It allows the students to record based on their observations and study of the subject rather than a fill in the blank style worksheet.

I’m looking forward to starting with my little boy in Kindergarten with Apologia’s astronomy. He already loves looking at the stars with us and I think he is going to love this science curriculum!

Linked below are two of the YouTube videos mentioned as well as the Apologia website. If you have any questions or comments leave them below!
